79th Annual Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens

Savannah Tour of HomesSeldom seen by visitors, Savannah’s finest private homes will be on display next month during a rare opportunity. The 79th annual Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens will provide the chance to admire the special furnishings that have been treasured by families for generations. You can take part in the home and garden walking tours and enjoy exclusive special events from March 27th through the 30th.

The self-guided tours will venture through different historic neighborhoods each day and you’ll enter private homes and gardens. Start at any of the homes featured that day and browse them all during a three-hour period. The homes vary in age, size and style. Most are high-stooped with 8 to 12 steps to climb for entry and are not handicapped accessible. Interior design ranges from period to traditional, contemporary or modern as they are private residences.

On each tour you can expect to see 5 to 8 homes and/or gardens, most of which fall inside the National Landmark Historic District. Take your time or move quickly. The good news is you can move at your own pace because they are self-guided. Visit sites in any order, starting at any home that’s featured on the tour that particular day.

Participants will receive official tour guidebooks with their tickets. You’ll find the address of each site marked on a color-coded map. There will also be volunteers throughout the neighborhoods to help with directions. They’ll be wearing a red sash. Additionally, docents will greet you at each site and will provide information about the home and its furnishings. There will be a sign and balloons to mark each home.

Most areas of downtown are within walking distance. The Friday Tour is located near Tour Headquarters. Thursday and Saturday’s are closer to Forsyth Park. The tour on Sunday is about a five-minute drive from downtown, so you can take your own car or purchase a shuttle ticket. The city of Savannah also offers a free trolley in the Historic District with limited stops.

We suggest you dress in casual attire and wear comfortable walking shoes. Just try to be mindful of the homes’ floors. Another thing to keep in mind is that no photography or videography is allowed inside the homes or gardens out of respect for homeowners. You can, however, take photos or videos of the homes from the sidewalk.

If you’re interested in the 2014 Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens, you can purchase your tickets now by mail, phone or online. They will not be mailed, but you can pick them up starting Tuesday, March 25. The Tour Headquarters, ticket pickup and gift shop are all located at 105 East Bay Street in Savannah.
