All You Need to Know About the Savannah Film Festival

Savannah Film FestivalPrepare to be entertained by cinematic creativity from both award-winning professionals and emerging student filmmakers. Savannah Film Festival 2013, presented by the Savannah College of Art and Design, is set for October 26 through November 2. More than 40,000 people attend the eight-day festival each year. It’s host to a variety of competition film screenings, special screenings, workshops, panels and lectures.

There are several honored guests this year, starting with Alexander Payne. He will receive the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award on Saturday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. Payne’s first two feature films were the comedies “Citizen Ruth” (1996) and “Election” (1999). Both “Sideways” (2004) and “The Descendants” (2011) won Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and were nominated for four other Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture. “About Schmidt” premiered in the competition at Cannes Film Festival in 2012. Four out of his six films were filmed in Nebraska!

The Discovery Award will go to Natalie Dormer on Tuesday, October 29 at 7 p.m. The actress portrays Margaery Tyrell on the award-winning HBO series “Game of Thrones.” She stars opposite of Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde in this fall’s “Rush.” Following “Rush,” she will be seen opposite Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Cameron Diaz in “The Counselor.” Dormer is well known for her starring role as Anne Boleyn on Showtime’s hit period drama, “The Tudors.” She has also appeared on “The Fades” and “Silk.”

Terence Stamp will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday, October 27 at 7 p.m. His career spans six decades, delighting and dazzling on the big screen, small screen, on stage with voice-overs and books in between. He has surpassed his career longevity desires, becoming a true luminary artist. Stamp’s career began in 1962 with his breakout, tour de force performance in the critically acclaimed adaptation of Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd.” He was honored with a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA Award for Best Newcomer, and he won the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year. In 1965, he received the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor Award for his eerie turn as Frederick Clegg in “The Collector.”  Stamp starred in “Superman” and “Superman II” and “The Limey.” Appearing in more than 80 films, he has starred alongside some of cinema’s most revered and prolific actors and filmmakers. Those include Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford, Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise and more. Stamp is also an accomplished writer and author.
