There’s a vibrant art scene in historic Savannah, Georgia. You’ll find everything from fine art to contemporary, starting in the city’s center. The City Market features over 50 local artists. Here’s a list of the best Savannah art galleries in the City Market, also known as the “art and soul” of Savannah.
A.T. Hun Art Gallery
The A.T. Hun Art Gallery is the city’s most eclectic art gallery. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and view the work of local and international contemporary artists in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Their work is also available for purchase. The 20 to 25 artists are selected based on their pure artist dedication. Their art must come from the art rather than from business motives. This “edgy” art gallery is located in the heart of Savannah’s historic district. In it, you’ll find a wide selection of nontraditional, unique, unusual, funky and beautiful artwork. If you visit during the weekend, you may run into Chuck Hamilton, the owner of the gallery and a great artist. He also entertains guests browsing for art by playing the piano. If you guess the song, you may even receive a discount!
Alix Baptiste Art Gallery
Savannah artist Alex Baptiste paints uplifting images of the troubled island he left behind in the Caribbean. He moved his easel indoors 17 years ago, but still thinks of himself as a sidewalk artist. Baptiste has an amazing story, featured in the pages of Southern Living magazine in August 2005, and Upscale Magazine in February of 2007. Be sure to visit his gallery at the City Market in Savannah.
This fine art gallery is said to be the perfect example of a boutique gallery, featuring the exclusive work of one of Savannah’s premier artists, Vicci S. Waits. It’s known as “Savannah’s gallery for contemporary realism and color.” Raffine Galerie opened in 2000, and Vicci S. Waits has quickly become one of Savannah’s most sought after artists. Specializing in custom commissions for her clients, she plans to open a second gallery in the future in Palm Beach, Florida.
Now entering its 21st year in the City Market, the Signature Gallery features award winning paintings, etchings, photographs, stained glass, metal sculptures, jewelry, blown glass, wood and pottery. One of the artists is working in the gallery each day and will answer questions about the art and the art process. The Signature Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. It’s nestled in the heart of the City Market.
Stephen Kasun Gallery
Stephen Kasun is a contemporary artist, with a focus on impressionistic land, sea, city and figure ‘scapes. He is a full time artist who lives and works in downtown Savannah. Kasun paints exclusively with palette knives and thick impasto oil paint, creating impressionistic works based on Savannah and the Lowcountry. He has evolved from traditional portraiture and still life to a more loose and free expression using bright colors and contemporary methods and subjects.
Thomas Kinkade Gallery
Thomas Kinkade is the most-collected living artist of his time. The Painter of Light emphasized simple pleasures and inspirational messages through his art. He gave credit to a higher power through textiles, collectibles, music and books. Kinkade’s goal was to have his artwork be a message of hope and inspiration to others.
