The Jepson Center for the ArtsFor all you art enthusiasts, Savannah is one of the best places to visit to experience the art culture of the past. The city is full of wonderful museums, but one of our favorites is The Jepson Center for the Arts. Make sure to cut out some of your time to tour this excellent museum during your visit. We, here at the President’s Quarters’ Inn, want you and your family to experience the best parts of Savannah. Here are a few things to know about The Jepson Center for the Arts.

Devoted to the art of today, The Jepson Center for the Arts is a great place for everyone to gain knowledge on today’s latest pieces of art and artists. The Museum, housed in a building designed by Moshe Safdie, was opened to the public in 2006. Featuring over 7,500 square feet of gallery space, The Jepson Center for the Arts was designed for major traveling exhibitions of contemporary art and installations of works from the permanent collections.

One amazing thing that the Museum holds is the Telfair’s Kirk Varnedoe Collection, a cornerstone of the Museum’s contemporary holdings. This collection was assembled in honor of the late Savannah native Kirk Varnedoe. This collection is unique in that it features works on paper by some of the most key artists of the past fifty years. The Jepson Center for the Arts features works by artists including Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Richard Avedon. Offering a diverse contemporary collection, the Museum is sure to provide you a wonderful time as you learn about the artists of this century.

Fun fact, The Jepson Center for the Arts holds the original iconic Bird Girl statue, made famous in the Jack Leigh photograph on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Make sure to read the book before visiting the Museum!

The Jepson Center for the Arts features numerous exhibitions. One of our favorite currently is the ‘In Living: Andy Warhol and Contemporary Printmaking’ collection. This top-notch collection features works by Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation Andy Warhol. Schnitzer’s works have challenged the perceptions of the popular culture, politics, and consumerism for more than fifty years. Another great exhibition currently featured at the Center is “The Visual Blues’. This collection features the art scene in Harlem from 1919 to 1940. The Visual Blues explores the rich interaction between the visual artists of the Harlem Renaissance and the wealth of blues and jazz music. You are sure to enjoy your time as you wander through The Jepson Center for the Arts.

Now that you know about The Jepson Center for the Arts and all that it holds, it is time for you to plan your trip to Savannah. The Presidents’ Quarters Inn offers a selection of lovely rooms and suites, which are all elegantly decorated to match the southern charm of the city. This charming bed and breakfast, located right on Oglethorpe Square, neighbors several prominent historical sites and offers easy access to The Jepson Center for the Arts. We can hardly wait to see you soon!

Squares in SavannahBecause of Savannah’s rich and intriguing history, it is the ideal place to visit for an educational and relaxing vacation. From 100-year-old houses to significant sights, this southern city is a history buff’s paradise. President’s Quarters’ Inn is located on a historic square, giving you easy access to some of Savannah’s famous locations. When you come to visit us, you do not want to miss the Squares in Savannah. Read on to find out why you should come and see these beautiful plazas.

In 1733, the city of Savannah was laid out around four open Squares, each surrounded by four residential blocks and four civic blocks. The original plan for the city allowed for growth and thus expansion of the grid. During the 18th and 19th centuries additional squares were added and by 1851 there were 24 squares in total. Later, in the 20th century, three of the squares were lost, leaving only 21. However, in 2010, one of the three “lost” squares, Ellis, was reclaimed to bring the total to 22 squares. Most of the lovely squares are named in honor of a person, persons or historical event. Many of the squares contain monuments, markers, memorials, statues, plaques, and other tributes.

Our favorite square in Savanna is Oglethorpe Square, where the charming President’s Quarters’ Inn is located. The Inn is located not only in this beautiful area, but also in what is considered the most architecturally and historically significant building of Oglethorpe Square, The Owens-Thomas House Museum. One of the three remaining Regency style houses designed by William Jay, The Owens-Thomas House is one of Savannah’s most cherished examples of Savannah’s preservation movement. Both in its day and today, it is considered Savannah’s most classy house. Oglethorpe Square offers several things for you to enjoy, indoor and outdoor. Take a turn around the Square and experience the different styles of architecture that the city holds.

One of the Squares in Savannah that you don’t want to miss out on is Johnson Square. This Square was part of the original four squares that formed Savannah. The first of Savannah’s squares, Johnson Square was and remains the largest of the 24. The picturesque Square contains two fountains, as well as a sundial dedicated to Colonel William Bull, the namesake of Savannah’s Bull Street. The Johnson Square Business Center is another landmark of Johnson Square. Formerly known as the Savannah Bank Building, the Business Center was the city’s first skyscraper, built in 1911. Interestingly, the Square is known as the financial district or banking square of Savannah!

Now that you know about two of our favorite Squares in Savannah that you don’t want to miss, start planning your trip to the area to enjoy them for yourself. When you choose The President’s Quarters’ Inn as your Savannah destination, you are locating you and your family in the heart of Savannah on one of the city’s most historic squares. The President’s Quarters’ Inn offers a selection of lovely rooms and suites, which are all elegantly decorated to match the southern charm of the city. Before you head out to tour the Squares in Savannah, the Inn will offer you a signature gourmet breakfast. Book your stay today!

St Patrick's Day in SavannahCelebrating a holiday in Savannah is always a fantastic idea! Whether it is Christmas or Columbus Day, enjoying the holiday in southern style is always a memorable experience. This year, we, here at President’s Quarters’ Inn, suggest that you and your family celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Savannah! You may wonder why you should! Let us tell you about a few fun things that the city does to celebrate this holiday!

The number one reason to spend this St Patrick’s Day in Savannah is the Parade. Held rain or shine, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a wonderful event filled with exciting and thrilling events. The 191st St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah will take place on Tuesday, March 17th. The event begins at 10:15 A.M. on the dot. Check out the parade’s map here so you can decide where you want to sit and enjoy the festivities.

Make the holiday into a weekend long celebration, starting with the Irish Heritage Dance on Friday, March 13th. The event is held in the Alee Temple and begins at 8:00 P.M. On Saturday, enjoy the Tara Feis Irish Celebration at Emmet Park. This festive event begins at 11:00 A.M. and ends at 5:00 P.M. The family-friendly Feis will be a feast for the ears, eyes and palate! With live performances, delicious cuisine, crafts, fun games, and true Irish hospitality, the Tara Feis is the best way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah. The Feis features performances from Savannah Pipes and Drums, Glor na Daire Irish Dance School, McLean Avenue Band, Harry O’Donoghue and so many more talented artists.

After enjoying the Tara Feis, head over to Tybee Island to participate in the Irish heritage Celebration Parade. The Parade starts at 3:00 P.M. on March 14th and winds around downtown Tybee Island. The Island will be decked out in green with a family-friendly parade featuring grand floats, marchers, and musical bands. The Irish heritage Parade is done in a unique and quirky way that only Tybee Island can do! Everyone is encouraged to dress in green in celebration! The Parade starts at the Tybee City Hall and proceeds down Butler Avenue! Come out and enjoy the festivities!

Another way to celebrate the holiday is on River Street. The fun isn’t confined to just one day; River Street celebrates this holiday for a week. Filled with multiple stages of non-stop live entertainment, games, scrumptious food, cold beverages and so much more, St Patrick’s Day on River Street is a event you don’t want to miss!

Fill your car up with gasoline and hit the road for a fun day trip in Savannah! Here are just a few things to know about taking a day trip to the picturesque city of Savannah.

One reason that Savannah is a great place for one of your day trips from Jacksonville FL, is that it is less than 2-hours away. Hop on to I-95 and keep driving until you arrive in the beautiful city of Savannah! Why should you visit? One of the best and most satisfying reasons is the delicious cuisine. Whether you want good southern cooking or something non-traditional, the beautiful city has something for everyone.

A favorite among locals, Alligator Soul Restaurant offers delicious southern food made from organic and local ingredients. This lovely establishment was once a basement grain warehouse and offers a wonderful atmosphere for a romantic dinner or a casual lunch with the gals. Another fantastic eatery is Rancho Alegre Cuban Restaurant. Serving traditional plates and cocktails in a festive atmosphere, the Rancho Alegre serves family recipes prepared with authentic and fresh ingredients. From fried plantains to homemade Sopa de Pollo, your palate is sure to be satisfied.

Now that you know where to eat, it is time for you to figure out what you want to do with your time in the area. One historical significant site in Savannah is the Bonaventure Planation. Offering a peaceful setting, this site rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, just east of Savannah. The cemetery is opened to the public daily from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and contains nearly 100 acres of beautiful land for guests to explore and enjoy.

Another reason Savannah should be one of your day trips from Jacksonville FL, is for a carriage ride. This is a fantastic way to see the best of the city in a fun and relaxing way. When you take a Carriage Tour of Savannah, you can get an up-close view of the city’s 18th and 19th century architecture, adorable charm, and grand statues.
