Did you know that the Old Fort Jackson Historic Site in Savannah, Georgia is the oldest standing brick fort in the state? Built in 1808, it is steeped in Southern history! At one time, the fort was a state-of-the-art defense against foreign attack. Now it’s a National Historic Landmark that attracts over 50,000 visitors each year! The next time you visit Savannah, take a trip to Old Fort Jackson and see what makes this fortress so special.

Plan your vacation to Savannah at President’s Quarters, and be sure to download our free Vacation Guide! With our guide in hand, you’ll have the ticket to the best Savannah experience possible. Our recommendations highlight the points of interest you want to see. You’re going to love it here!

Spend an Afternoon at Old Fort Jackson

Rich History

Old Fort Jackson is named after James Jackson, a one-time governor of Georgia who liberated Savannah from the British in 1782. Facing the Savannah River, the fort was originally built of earth, faced with brick, and topped with a gun platform of wood – making it one of the strongest fortifications in the country.

During the War of 1812, the United States anticipated an attack on Savannah and took several steps to prepare the fort for action. They built a palisade nearby, added a rail to the top of the cannon platform, and created a “hot shot furnace” where cannonballs could be heated to set attacking ships on fire. The war ended in 1815 with Savannah safe and secure, and today, much of the fort looks the same as it did 150 years ago.

Events & Attractions

One of the best ways to experience Old Fort Jackson is to take a self-guided tour. Visitors of all ages can enjoy cannon firings, interactive programs, and incredible views of the Savannah riverfront. Feel free to explore the fort’s many chambers where you’ll find tools and artifacts from the CSS Georgia. You’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back in time!

The Fort is also a great place to host an event. This 200-year-old venue has an enchanting and rustic atmosphere that’s perfect for weddings, corporate parties, and more. They even offer a variety of children’s birthday party options. Contact Natalie Butler at (912) 651-6823 for more information.

Hours & Cost

Old Fort Jackson is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is just $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 2 to 12. Cannon-firing programs are presented daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the spring and summer months. Be sure to pick up a souvenir from the gift shop before you leave!

Visit the Mercer Williams House Museum

Less than a mile from our bed and breakfast is the world-famous Mercer Williams House, an 1860’s mansion that was designed by New York architect John Norris. It was built for General Hugh W. Mercer and was restored by Jim Williams in 1969. Today, the home is a great place to relish in historic artwork and antique furnishings. We suggest taking a guided tour and visiting the gardens if weather permits.

Fun Fact: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed in the Mercer Williams House. Don’t forget to watch the movie before you go!

Visit the Owens-Thomas House

The Owens-Thomas House is another great place to explore. It was built in 1819 and is considered one of the finest illustrations of English Regency architecture in America. Now a National Historic Landmark, the home boasts a decorative arts collection, Owens family furnishings, and American and European objects dating back to the 1700s. Tours of the Owens-Thomas House are available daily.

Learn About the Telfair Academy

If you’ve ever been to Savannah (or anywhere near it), you’ve probably heard the Telfair name. This family played an integral role in Georgia’s history and is responsible for opening the oldest public art museum in the South. The Academy, which was built in 1818 as a mansion for Alexander Telfair, now houses the family’s impressive collection of American and European paintings. It’s a wonderful place to admire antique furniture, sculptures, works on paper, and more.

Check Out the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum

The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is perfect for a rainy day. Situated in the historic William Scarbrough House, this museum houses nine exhibits of model ships, paintings, and antiques. You’ll learn about some the most important vessels in maritime history! Feel free to bring a history buff and spend the afternoon exploring the museum’s galleries and gift shop.

Admire the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

An iconic symbol of Savannah, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is best described in one word: stunning. It’s the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Georgia and features towering steeples and incredible stained-glass windows. Take a few minutes to admire the architecture, then walk inside and view the impressive murals, altar, and choir area. The church is open for tours Monday through Saturday.
