Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anna Quindlen was the headliner for a special spring presentation for the 2013 Savannah Book Festival this May. Quindlen, who won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary, was the featured guest at a ‘Lunch and Conversation’ event with book signing on Thursday, May 16, 2013 on Skidaway Island. Those who attended the luncheon received a paperback copy of Quindlen’s recent memoir, Lots of Candles Plenty of Cake. In this recent book, Quindlen reflects on her life, past, present and future, her faith, her relationships with parents and family, and her experiences with caring for and then losing her mother to ovarian cancer.  At the age of 19 she became mom to her siblings.  She talks about how her personality and feelings on feminism have shaped her over the years. She says, “”After all those years as a woman hearing ‘not thin enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough, not this enough, not that enough,’ almost overnight I woke up one morning and thought, ‘I’m enough,’ ” she says.

Quindlen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to an Irish father and an Italian mother. She graduated in 1970 from South Brunswick High School in South Brunswick, New Jersey, and she graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1974.   She  has had a very successful career as an author, opinion columnist, and journalist.

Quindlen began her journalism career in 1974 as a reporter for the New York Post. Between 1977 and 1994 she held several posts at The New York Times. Quindlen left journalism in 1995 to become a full-time novelist. In 1999, she joined Newsweek, writing a bi-weekly column until announcing her semi-retirement in 2009.

Quindlen is known as a critic of what she perceives to be the fast-paced and increasingly materialistic nature of modern American life. Much of her personal writing centers on her mother.  Of five of her best-selling novels, three have been made into movies.  They are:   One True Thing,  which was made into a feature film in 1998.  Meryl Streep received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in this movie. Black and Blue and Blessings were made into television movies in 1999 and 2003 respectively.

Quindlen is married to Gerald Krovatin, an attorney, and they have three children. She lives with her family in New York City.

While those who are not as familiar with the South may think that this character is fake, theatrical, or stereotypical, you will find that once you get to know the native people of the real South, it is as authentic as the warm and balmy air on a sultry summer evening on the porch. Southerners love people and this is what makes the South so hospitable.

Southern hospitality focuses much on food and the role it plays in daily life. It is customary to bring food to the home of a new neighbor, the ill, and the bereaved. Even if a visitor arrives without food to share, they are welcomed and included in the gathering and offered food to eat as desired. There is a wonderful sense of community in the South.

Southerners are also trained in respectful behavior from a young age. The titles“Ma’am” and “Sir” are widely used. A younger person, or even an older person with whom one is more familiar, may be addressed “Miss” or “Mr” before their first name. Men and boys are taught to open doors for women and women for those who are older or infirm. Men and boys pull out the chair for a woman to be seated and they rise when she arrives at or leaves the table, or the room. Men remove their hats when greeting a woman, or going indoors. People invite newcomers to social events and to religious services. Older folks are respected for their wisdom.

People in the South also take great joy in the beauty around them. People take pride in those special touches that make a house a home. Historic sites are protected and cared for. Gardening is a favorite hobby of many and Savannah is well known for its beautiful gardens and homes.

February

Georgia Heritage Society’s Colonial Fair and Muster- this celebrates the founding of the Colony of Georgia which was started in Savannah by James E. Oglethorpe on February 12, 1733. These events are designed to promote the preservation of the history, historical sites, documents and other materials that are so important to the heritage of this state and country.

Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival- This event features dance performances, musical concerts, lectures and art exhibits.

Savannah Irish Festival- This event is held at the Savannah Civic Center Arena in the historic district to showcase the grand culture of Ireland.

March

First Saturday on the River- River Street is always a hub for much activity and on the first Saturday of the month you can enjoy local art, crafts, entertainment and food with the whole family. This event is held every month from March until December.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration- This is the nation’s second largest and the South’s most famous celebration of St. Patrick. There are many events, the most notable being the parade. This is a city-wide party where you do not want to be caught in any color but green! Even the fountain in Forsyth Park is dyed green! There is even an app for your phone to help you plan and to show you the parade route!!

Savannah Music Festival- This 15 day festival, held in the heart of the historic district, features world-class music of a wide variety of genres including blues, classical, jazz, and bluegrass.

Annual Tour of Homes and Gardens- This annual spring event offers self-guided walking tours through private homes and gardens in Savannah’s National Historic Landmark District.

April

First Saturday on the River

SCAD International Festival- This festival celebrates the college’s international art community. Highlights include international cuisine, dance, demonstrations, music, a global fashion show, and art and cultural displays.

N.O.G.S. Tour of Hidden Gardens– Different private gardens are selected each year for their design, historical interest and general beauty. A walking tour includes eight walled gardens plus the Massie School garden.

Sidewalk Art Festival- This unique event features SCAD students drawing in chalk, creating unique and original works of art, right on the sidewalks of Forsyth Park. There is also a student and faculty art exhibition, fair, food, and children’s and youth areas for younger artists.

Savannah Garden Expo- Features an open-air market, gardens on display, workshops, demonstrations, seminars and other lectures.

Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, PCA Champions Tour- A must see for those who love the game and enjoy some of the best players.

May

First Saturday on the River

Savannah Shakespeare Festival- Live Shakespeare classics are performed at the City Lights Theater. There are even special performances for kids.

Scottish Games Festival- These are the traditional Scottish Games featuring competitions, clan displays and booths, food and drink, bagpipe music and other Scottish music.

Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade- this features a huge water fight and parade of water warriors that is sure to usher in the start of summer family style.

SCAD Sand Arts Festival- This annual event features student made sand creations on the beach at Tybee Island.

June

Savannah Asian Festival- Features the cultures of China, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Korea, Thailand, and Pakistan to showcase their talents.

Fourth of July on the Waterfront- features regional artists, food, fun, and fireworks over the Savannah River.

Savannah Seafood Festival on the River– includes live entertainment, local art, crafts, daily beach party bash and more.

Savannah Harbor Boat Parade of Lights– Kick off the Holiday Season on the waterfront! More than 60 decorated yachts and sailboats parade along the Savannah River just before a fireworks display. This is part of Southern Lights, a Savannah Holiday Celebration.

Southern Lights Tree of Lights– this is a long standing tradition of lighting the community Christmas tree. Sing-a-longs and entertainment are highlights of the evening.

December

First Saturday on the River

Christmas on the River– Arts and Crafts to help you complete your shopping, a Christmas parade, carolers, bells, and Santa all make this a fun and joyful time for you and the family.

Holiday Tour of Homes– Self-guided walking tour of private homes in the Historic District, all decorated for Christmas.

City Market New Year’s Eve Celebration– This is an outdoor street party with live music and entertainment for the whole family.

The Pirate’s House, 20 East Broad St.

The Pirate’s House has been operational since 1753! They were first opened as an inn for seafarers and became a rendezvous for pirates and sailors alike while on high adventure from Singapore to Bombay and London to Port Said. Today, the entire family will enjoy this intriguing restaurant. They have an extensive menu that caters to all tastes and includes a wide array of scandalous desserts. They run fifteen separate dining rooms, each with its own distinct charm. Eating at the Pirate’s House is a destination all its own!

Joe’s Crab Shack, 504 E. River Street

Joe’s Crab Shack is an American chain of beach-themed seafood restaurants. It was founded in Houston, Texas, but now operates across the United States. It serves seafood and American cuisine.

J. Christopher’s, 122 E. Liberty

J. Christopher’s has been described as “one of life’s little luxuries”. This is the perfect spot for both breakfast and lunch in Savannah with family and friends. They are open for lunch only on Tuesday and lunch and dinner on Wednesday through Saturday. Get there early! They have been known to actually run out of food– a very good sign!

Belford’s Fine Dining, 315 West Julian Street

Belford’s Savannah offers the best in fine dining. They are located in the heart of the historic district in City Market. You can grab a casual lunch here or host a wedding reception! Choose from a tender Angus steak, some of the best seafood in Savannah, decadent desserts, or many other choices. They are located in a beautiful old brick building in the heart of Savannah’s National Landmark Historic District. They are listed in Historic Savannah Foundation’s architectural inventory as a notable example of its style and is praised in architectural surveys for its arched windows, exposed brick walls and doorways with semiciruclar segmental arched toplights. Hyman W. Witcover, a practicing architect in Savannah from 1897-1923 is responsible for this design and that of many other historic buildings and homes. Over the years this building first was occupied by Savannah’s Hebrew Congregation, later by the Belford family, whose portrait still hangs in the west dining room, and later it became an important wholesale food company.

The Lady and Sons, 102 West Congress Street

This highly acclaimed restaurant was started and is owned by Paula Deen and her sons. From very humble beginnings as a catering sandwich business, The Lady and Sons has grown and expanded to the popular eatery it is today. At one time, crowds waited in lines that wrapped outside the building for hours but now they are accepting reservations. You will want to get your name on this list to enjoy Paula’s home cooked Southern meals and good times!

Have you thought about the horses? Most people do! Some even feel sorry for these majestic animals in service! But the reality is that these horses are treated like royalty! They are well fed, well watered, and constantly monitored. In the summer months, they do not work during the hottest part of the day. Their temperatures are monitored and the animals are quickly cooled as needed. They will tour in light rain but not heavy rain or lightening. Their shoes are maintained and changed at regular intervals. I would guess that the lives of the staff taking care of the horses in the stables are more difficult! The horses have days off each week and there are enough horses that each one only works one shift per day. These horses are treated with much love, respect and gentleness.

Wondering if anyone famous ever took a carriage tour? Well, wonder no more! Country singer, Joe Nichols had his wedding with Carriage Tours of Savannah! Another country singer, Billy Currington, gave an interview for CMT on a carriage ride! On a more sober note, the funeral for Sgt. Peney, 22 year old who was killed in battle in Afghanistan, included a carriage ride, which was an honor for everyone.
