Here are a few things to know about the Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge!

The Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge was previously owned by the descendants of a wealthy northerner who obtained the island just after the Civil War and was designated a National Wildlife Refuge in 1969. One company that offers tours is the Wilderness Southeast. They conduct private and group day-trips to the island for beach and island exploration. Biking, hiking, surf fishing, birdwatching and sea kayaking are just some of the recreational draws. The family is sure to have a blast! Whether you want to cruise around the island on a bike or hike through the green forest, there is something for everyone!

This 10,053-acre island has a seven-mile strip of immaculate beach, a driftwood bone yard, rolling dunes, vast salt marshes and miles of trail through mature maritime forest. Wassaw Island is 14 miles south of Savannah and accessible by private or charter boat. The area offers several charting companies from which you can choose in order to get to the island. Sundial Charters offers year round tours to Wassaw Island.

Savannah Book FestivalLook out all you book lovers because the 2015 Savannah Book Festival is something you don’t want to miss! From Janet Evanovich to Anne and Christopher Rice to P. J. O’Rourke, the Savannah Book Festival is packed full of amazing authors. This February plan to attend one of Savannah’s most loved events. The Presidents’ Quarters Inn wants you to experience the best events in Savannah, and this is one of them! Enjoy four days of author lectures and scrumptious food! Don’t know much about the Savannah Book Festival? Don’t worry! We have got you covered. Read on to find out more on the event.

The 2015 Savannah Book Festival begins on Thursday, February 12 at 6:00 P.M. The first event will be held in Trustees Theater and will open with Janet Evanovich followed by a book signing. The opening address cost $15 per person! SCAD Trustees Theater is located on 216 East Broughton Street, Savannah, GA. This will be the first time ever for Janet Evanovich, New York Times best-selling author of 21 Stephanie Plum mystery novels to appear at the Savannah Book Festival. Not only is this Janet’s first time at the festival, but it is also the first time that the event will be opened by a woman! Don’t miss out on this evening of mystery and intrigue!

On Friday at 6:00 P.M., come out to hear from P. J. O’Rourke, one of our nation’s keenest cultural commentators. Tickets, which cost $15 per person, go on sale to the general public on January 10, 2015. Click here! If you have ever listened to NPR’s ‘Wait! Wait, Don’t Tell Me!’ you have heard the biting wit of O’Rourke! For a night of laughs and good company, attend this wonderful event! After listening to O’Rourke’s thought provoking humor, attend the book signing following the address.

The third day of the Savannah Book Festival is packed full of fantastic events! Starting at 9:00 A.M. and continuing to 5:00 P.M. Telfair, Wright, and Chippewa Squares will be featuring numerous events. Make your way to Jepson Museum and Trinity United Methodist Church located on Telfair Square for author signings and book sales. Guests can also purchase refreshments! The Lutheran Church of the Ascension Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall, located on Wright Square, and the First Baptist Church Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall, located on Chippewa Square, will both feature author signings and book sales! To complete the wonderful four-day festival, Anne and Christopher Rice will perform the closing address at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday. The address will take place in Trustees Theater and costs $15 per person!

Little Tybee Island is a chain of inland hammocks and small barrier islands connected by a maze of tidal creeks. Largely deserted even in summer months, the area is accessible only by boat. Little Tybee Island is a pristine, unoccupied nature preserve. The little island is visible from the south end of Tybee Island. Funny thing is that “Little” Tybee is actually more than twice Tybee Island’s size. Between the islands is Tybee Creek and Inlet. People that wish to visit the island can use a local charter services, like Sundial Charters.

This unique wilderness preserve is abundant with rich coastal salt marshes, picturesque beaches, and natural dunes and forests of live oak, pine, and palm. This year the Savannah Harbor Foundation Festival of Lights and Winter Carnival will be held at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa. The fantastic event will feature a drive through light show around the Hutchinson Island Road Course. The Savannah Harbor Festival of Lights will also have a Ferris wheel as well as other mechanical rides on Bryan Square. Let the kids run around and have a marvelous time exploring the winter wonderland. The Festival also features a Gingerbread Village inside the hotel, pictures with Santa, Winter Themed “Fun Zone”, holiday concessions and fabulous holiday decor around the Resort. Visitors are sure to have an unforgettable time as they wander around the Savannah Harbor Festival of Lights and Winter Carnival.

Starting on Friday, November 28, the 2014 Savannah Harbor Festival of Lights will open its gates at 6:30 P.M. until 10:00 P.M. It will be open Thursdays through Sundays until December 18. The Festival will then open daily from December 18 to December 28 from 6:30 P.M. until 10:00 P.M. Admission costs $20 per family vehicle with up to 8 people in the vehicle. A family vehicle with 8-16 passengers costs $40. For those wishing to park for the carnival, parking is available at the International Trade and Convention Center.

The event is full of many wonders. Guests start their journey through the winter wonderland with a warm welcome from the Festival’s warm Gate Ambassadors. Drive through 1.5 miles of giant lighted holiday displays, from Santa and his sleigh to Rudolph and his friends. After driving through the excellent light show, make your way over to the Winter Carnival and continue the fun. The Ferris wheel overlooks the beautiful Savannah River and River Street. Wander around the Carnival and grab a treat at one of the numerous concession stands. With choices between s’mores, hot chocolate, hot dogs and more, you are sure to find something that satisfies your palate. Huddle around the warm bon fire while you roast your s’mores and enjoying the holiday music that fills the air. This is a holiday experience that you don’t want to miss!

Savannah Rock n Roll Marathon Are you ready for one of the best events that the beautiful city of Savannah has to offer? Lace up your running shoes and get ready to dance your way to the finish line of the Savannah Rock n Roll Marathon. Thousands of walkers and runners alike come out for this amazing event of live music, fantastic food, and intriguing exhibits. Start planning your trip to the Presidents’ Quarters Inn for a run of a lifetime. Nothing compares to running down the old cobble stone streets of the historic southern city. Here are a few things to know about the Savannah Rock n Roll Marathon.

There is something for everyone at the Savannah Rock n Roll Marathon. Offering a marathon, a 2 person half marathon, a half marathon, a 5K and a 1-mile, the event offers an options for every skill level. The event begins with a bang on Saturday, November 8, with the marathon, half marathon, and 2 person half marathon. Runners take their mark on Bay Street and Bull Street at 7:00 A.M. and wind through downtown Savannah to the finish line in Forsyth Park. The track passes by three of the city’s iconic downtown squares, the stunning homes of Gordonston, and the southern charm of West Savannah. On Sunday, November 9, the Savannah Rock n Roll Marathon offers a 5K and 1-mile run. Runners for the 5K start their journey through beautiful Savannah at 1:00 P.M. and those running the 1-mile start at 2:30 P.M. Both runs start and end in the picturesque Daffin Park. Register today to ensure you have a spot in the fantastic race.

At the end of all the runs, American Idol season 11 winner Phillip Phillips, will be performing! Cranford Hollow and A Nickel Bag of Funk will also be performing live. The uniqueness of the Savannah Rock n Roll Marathon is the fact that at every mile mark there is a band performing music to keep you moving. Music every mile makes up the heart of this event. Savannah bands will be performing a variety of music from alternative to classic rock, funk, punk, and blues to jazz it up. Race day can get crazy, and the last thing you need to worry about is parking. Free parking is limited and only available for runners. You can find free parking at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center. All cars must be parked by 6:00am on Saturday morning.
