The Perfect Itinerary for Your Day at Reynolds Square in Savannah
Learn About Savannah’s History in the Morning
Reynolds Square is one of the oldest squares in Savannah. Established in 1734, it was named after the first colonial governor of Georgia. It’s here that the original House of Assembly was held and where the first reading of the Declaration of Independence took place in the state.
Now located at the heart of the Business District, Reynolds Square keeps its historical roots. A statue of Reverend John Wesley, the founder of Methodism and first rector of Savannah’s Christ Church, stands at the center of the square. One of Savannah’s most architecturally important houses is also located here. Be sure to check out the Oliver Sturges House at 27 Abercorn Street.
Have Lunch at The Olde Pink House
Just a few steps from Reynolds Square is the historic Olde Pink House. This Georgia mansion was built in 1771 for James Habersham, one of Savannah’s founders. Nowadays it is known as one of the best restaurants in town and is the perfect place to have lunch with your loved ones. From classic Southern dishes like crispy fried lobster tails and chicken pot pie to delicious appetizers like spiced peanuts with a honey glaze, the Olde Pink House offers a top-notch menu that’s hard to resist.
Go for an Afternoon Walk With Your Loved Ones
After a delicious break, it’s time to go for a walk. Reynolds Square is located near Savannah’s famous waterfront, which offers several attractions like riverboat tours and quaint souvenir boutiques. Before heading back to Reynolds Square, make sure you stop at Leopold’s Ice Cream to taste their famous tutti frutti creation! Established in 1919 and ran by the same family since then, it’s an absolute must-see.
There’s nothing like walking around a shaded square, surrounded by the people you love, with a sweet ice cream in your hand. Feel the breeze as it blows through the Spanish moss hanging from the large oak trees above. Sit on one of the wooden benches and take a moment to get a look around and get lost in the beauty of it all.
Spend A Night at the Theater
End your day at Reynolds Square with a show at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts. This historic theater offers a wide variety of films, operas, concerts, plays, and more. It was built in 1921 by South Carolina native Arthur Melville Lucas. The building underwent massive renovations in the 1990’s and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s the perfect place to spend the evening!
Tip: Travel back to the 1920’s under a stunning art deco ceiling and enjoy one of the theater’s many eclectic movies. They regularly play the 1927 cult classic, Metropolis!
