Savannah St. Patrick’s Day History

As one of the most historic cities in the South with a breathtaking river view, Savannah offers a prime location for an outdoor celebration. Beyond that, Savannah has a rich Irish history that dates as far back as 1812, when the Hibernian Society of Savannah was formed by 13 Irish Protestants to help their fellow immigrants. The first public parade by the Hibernian Society was in 1824, and the annual tradition lived on, halting only in trying political times. Over 100 years later, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee was formed, and in 1961, the Savannah River was even dyed green to celebrate. Many other traditions have built up over the years, including the annual wreath laying ceremony on the Celtic Cross.

The Parade Today

The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade draws patrons in huge numbers, and as the crowds have grown, new options for viewing have become available. One of these is bleacher seating, which is offered for individuals and corporations who want to secure a spot before the day of the parade. There are also shuttles available for off-site parkers. The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Committee has its own online magazine with information on members and parade participants, including the grand marshall and live bands who will be playing during the event.

Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl

Savannah is also a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day destination because of it’s many great bars and street drinking opportunities.
