4 of the Best Things to Do at Skidaway Island State Park

Just minutes from the historic city of Savannah, Skidaway Island State Park borders Georgia’s Intracoastal Waterway and is a paradise for nature lovers of all ages. This 588-acre park offers a variety of fun activities for guests to enjoy, including hiking and birding opportunities, educational programs, camping, and more – and it’s all just a 25-minute drive from the Presidents’ Quarters Inn! The next time you’re in Savannah, set some time aside and spend a day (or two!) at this unique Georgia State Park. Here are some of our favorite things to do there.

Take a Trip to Skidaway Island State Park

1. Traverse the Trails

With 7 miles of scenic nature trails, Skidaway Island is the perfect place to explore. Guests can spend an afternoon hiking or biking through the park, and bicycle rentals are available at the park office. The trails wind through maritime forest and past salt marsh, leading to a boardwalk and observation tower. Keep your eyes peeled for native wildlife like deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, and egrets, and be sure to check out a Skidaway Island trail map before heading out!

2. Go Birding

One of the most popular attractions at Skidaway Island State Park is the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, where more than 300 species of bird have been spotted by guests. The trail features 18 sites where visitors can observe different bird communities in a variety of habitats including salt marshes, old rice fields, woodlands, freshwater wetlands, and more.

3. Visit the Interpretive Center

Inside the park’s interpretive center, guests will find a birding station that offers binoculars, reference books, and a window where you can look for migrating species. The center also features a reptile room and other cultural displays, including a towering, 20-foot Giant Ground Sloth replica. Educational programs like guided hikes, tours, and park ranger discussions are available for all ages and are offered year round.

4. Sleep Under the Stars

The park is also an ideal destination for camping near Savannah, GA. The scenic campground is nestled under live oaks and Spanish moss and features open-air picnic shelters, restrooms, and laundry facilities, and there are a few RV sites with sewer hookups. For those who don’t like roughing it, the park also has camper cabins with screened porches, air conditioning, bathrooms and showers, a kitchen, master bedroom, and kids’ sleeping loft. Outside, visitors will find a picnic table, grill, and fire ring that are the perfect place to relax during your camping adventure.
